AGA Medical designed the AMPLATZER® Vascular Plug to allow closure of peripheral veins and arteries using a minimally-invasive transcatheter procedure instead of an open surgical procedure.

AMPLATZER® Vascular Plug for Peripheral Vascular Occlusion

The AMPLATZER® Vascular Plug for peripheral vascular occlusion utilizes the shape memory of Nitinol, a wire made from an alloy of nickel and titanium. Each Plug is made of a Nitinol wire mesh that is formed into a plug shape.

AGA Medical’s AMPLATZER® Vascular Plug occludes vessels by expanding to block the blood vessel. Because the Vascular Plug securely places a Nitinol mesh across the entire vessel, a single Plug can frequently block a blood vessel that would have required many “pushable” coils, which makes it a very efficient and cost-effective alternative to coils or surgery.
